Nordic Fish Oil Diet

Nordic fish oils provide essential fatty acids (EFAs). You can get fish oil into your diet by eating cold water fish or by taking fish oil supplements.
  1. Benefits

    • Nordic fish oils have high nutritional value. They provide omega-3 fatty acids, which the American Heart Association recommends be taken daily for people with elevated triglycerides or risk factors for heart disease. A study by Sports Health found that fish oils helped lower cholesterol levels in football players. Fish oil is also shown to benefit the brain and heart as well as enhance skin health.

How to Get Fish Oil in Your Diet

    • The best way to get fish oil into your diet is to eat cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel, krill, tuna, herring or sardines. Also, there are a number of Nordic fish oil supplements available. These come in a capsule you can take daily or as liquid oils that can be added to salads, sandwiches or smoothies.

    Considerations

    • A fish oil should not have an old, "fishy" smell to it. If it does smell fishy, it has probably been exposed to oxygen and is becoming rancid. Likewise, the oil should not taste fishy; avoid oils that have strong fruity flavors because they may be covering the flavor of oil that is going rancid.

Talk to your doctor about using fish oil and get some recommendations on how much should you should take. The American diet tends to fall short on cold water fish consumption, so supplements may be recommended.
