The Effects of Sea Salt in Drinking Water
Sea salt is often promoted as a natural, healthier alternative to table salt. However, both sea salt and table salt contain sodium chloride, which is linked to high blood pressure when consumed daily in higher amounts than recommended.-
Sea Salt
-
Sea salt is produced when seawater is evaporated and minimally processed, leaving large, coarse salt crystals with trace minerals. In general, sea salt is not any more beneficial for your health than table salt.
Dangers of Sodium
-
A high-sodium diet from too much salt and processed food may lead to high blood pressure, which in turn can cause other dangerous health problems. Most people in the United States consume too much sodium in their diets; in general, you should focus on cutting down on your salt intake.
Salt in Drinking Water
-
Adding salt to drinking water could put you far above your recommended daily intake of sodium. Just a tsp. of salt contains 2,400 milligrams of sodium; most people need less than this amount for an entire day.
Sea Salt Flush
-
Sea salt flushes are intended to cleanse the body of toxins and treat conditions like colds or high blood pressure. Performing a sea salt flush involves mixing a small amount of sea salt into one or two qts. of water, drinking the mixture and allowing it to run through your body. This practice may be performed each day for a week or more.
Flush Considerations
-
Dr. Andrew Weil suggests that sea salt flushes may be dangerous in terms of the amount of sodium intake. Dr. Weil also notes that in most cases, the human body should function well enough that it does not require cleansing or flushing.
