How to Make Protein Shakes Less Frothy

A powdered protein shake mix is a delicious way to refuel after a workout. Convenient and portable, protein powder can be mixed into any type of liquid to create a tasty snack or meal replacement. However, many people find the texture of protein shakes unpalatable---if not mixed properly, they can be grainy, chalky or overly frothy. Proper mixing technique will ensure a smooth, froth-free, tasty shake every time.

Instructions

    • 1

Add protein powder to a mixing cup or blender. Use a blender for optimal results, but a mixing cup with a secure lid or a bottle with a twist cap will also work.

    • 2

Add the amount of liquid indicated in the powder's instructions. Water, milk, fruit juice or tea is a delicious choice.

    • 3

Add ice to break up and dissolve the protein powder. Ice is not necessary in a blender, but it can make the shake taste better. If ice is not available, choose a mixing cup with a built-in agitator.

    • 4

Mix the shake. Start a blender on a low speed, and gradually increase it to high. Shake a mixing cup vigorously for several minutes until no lumps of powder remain.

    • 5

Allow the shake to settle for a few minutes so any froth resulting from the mixing process can rise to the surface and dissipate.

    • 6

Skim the shake's surface of any remaining froth with a spoon.
