Dandelion Herb for Detoxing
Dandelion is a very effective detoxifying herb because of its ability to stimulate the liver. It helps improve the liver's natural ability to eliminate toxins by increasing the movement of bile. It also works well as a diuretic, helping the body release fluids.-
Parts Used
-
All parts of the dandelion are used for medicinal purposes. The root is very bitter and is generally used in liver detoxifying blends. It is also high in minerals which makes it good for use in blood-purifying mixtures. The leaves and root also possess diuretic properties.
Brewing and Consumption Methods
-
Boil dandelion root into a decoction and then strain. Before boiling, cut up the root either in a coffee grinder that is used just for herbs and spices or with a mortar and pestle. This helps create more surface area to extract the medicinal properties from the root during the decocting or boiling process. The leaves and flowers can be brewed into a standard infusion or tea. Add some peppermint for flavor. Or, purchase a tincture or extract and add it to juice or water. It's convenient and eliminates the bitterness. Alternatively, add the leaves to a salad or even marinate them in an Italian dressing.
Additional Benefits
-
In addition to dandelion's detoxifying properties, it is also high in iron, magnesium, and vitamins A and C. The root benefits the kidneys, bladder, gallbladder and stomach. It is a tonic herb which means that it works best with long-term use rather than for acute conditions.
Other Detoxifying Herbs
-
Milk thistle, chicory and cascara sagrada work well as detoxifying herbs. Milk thistle is excellent in detoxifying the liver, while chicory has similar properties to dandelion. Cascara sagrada increases urination output. It is also important to eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water.
