Drug Interactions

When combined with blood thinners like warfarin or coumadin, glucosamine HCL increases your risk of developing prolonged or uncontrollable bleeding following an injury, dental work or surgery, warns RxList.
Risks

A study conducted at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1998 raised concerns that glucosamine HCL may cause blood sugar levels in people with diabetes to rise. Because of this, many doctors discourage diabetics from taking glucosamine HCL.
Considerations

If you are pregnant or nursing, avoid taking glucosamine HCL as its effects upon fetal development are unknown. If you have a history of asthma or are scheduled for surgery within the next two weeks, it may not be safe for you to take glucosamine HCL, cautions RxList.
