• According to the Mayo Clinic, Lubiprostone is approved for women ages 18 and older who have IBS with constipation. It increases the secretion of fluid in your intestines, making bowel movements easier. It is used to treat chronic constipation in adults, as well as IBS, according to Drugs.com.

Side Effects

• According to Drugs.com, you may experience shortness of breath or a tightness in your chest about one hour after taking Lubiprostone. This should go away within three hours, but you should consult your doctor if symptoms become bothersome or worsen. You should seek emergency care if you have any of the following side effects: hives; difficulty breathing; and swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, according to Drugs.com. Don't take the drug if you have severe diarrhea. Lubiprostone could be harmful to an unborn baby so tell your doctor if you are pregnant. According to Drugs.com, you should also tell your doctor if you have a history of hernia, gallstones, Crohn's disease, Hirschsprung's disease, impacted bowel movement, diverticulitis, polyps, or any other cause for obstruction in your gastrointestinal (digestive) system. Lubiprostone may not be appropriate for you if you have one of these conditions.

Other Treatments for IBS

• According to the Mayo Clinic, another prescription drug, Alosetron, is intended for severe cases of diarrhea-predominant IBS in women who haven't responded to other treatments. Irritable Bowel Syndrome can also often be controlled by changing your diet and lifestyle. Reducing stress can also help combat symptoms. Exercise and other holistic remedies such as yoga or hypnosis may help some people. Some doctors recommend fiber supplements, anti-diarrheal medications or antibiotics to treat symptoms. Antidepressants are another option.
