Is 6 Oxo Safe?
6-OXO is a nutritional supplement created by biochemist Patrick Arnold, head researcher for ErgoPharm. The product is alleged to increase testosterone levels by inhibiting the body's natural production of estrogen. It is marketed to bodybuilders seeking to develop and enhance muscle mass.-
The Official Story
-
As a nutritional supplement, 6-OXO is not subject to testing or review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the FDA officially considers 6-OXO to be an "adulterated" substance. Technically, this means the manufacturer has not submitted any information or evidence to the FDA proving the supplement to be safe and/or effective. To research further the FDA's position on 6-OXO and other supplements, go to the FDA's official website and search specific product names and terms.
Athletes and 6-OXO
-
6-OXO is detectable in urine. Its use, along with that of any other product containing 6-OXO as an ingredient, is banned in most organized professional, amateur and school sports.
Side Effects
-
With increased testosterone levels, users of 6-OXO and other steroids are subject to several common side effects. These include acne, increased sex drive, prostate enlargement and pattern baldness. On various bodybuilding blogs and message boards, users of 6-OXO have also reported side effects of dizziness, chest pains and flu-like symptoms such as nausea and fatigue.
Safety Warnings
-
There have been only a few clinical trials of 6-OXO for safety and effectiveness. One notable peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that 6-OXO significantly increased testosterone levels, as well as levels of DHT (a hormone associated with hair loss), with no observed side effects. However, in 2008, Health Canada warned that users of 6-OXO have a higher risk of blood clotting and seizures. The product is not authorized for sale in Canada.
