The FDA has reported 92 different side effects that can be linked to the use of aspartame. Some of these are headaches, dizziness, mood swings, nausea, stomach cramps, memory loss, fatigue, hives, seizures and difficulty breathing.

It took the FDA several years to approve aspartame for use in foods. The FDA was concerned about a link to cancer, brain tumors, brain lesions and lymphoma. Restrictions were left in place with regards to aspartame until 1996, when it was approved for use in all foods
