The Side Effects of Isoflavone

Isoflavones are a group of compounds found exclusively in the soybean used in supplement form as an estrogenic, antioxidant remedy for users. Isoflavones bind to estrogen receptors in the body, which in turn effects bodily processes stimulated by estrogen. As is the case with most natural supplements, there are a number of side effects that are associated with use.
  1. Positive Side Effects

    • A number of positive side effects are associated with using isoflavone. Some of these side effects include counteracting damage to certain types of bodily tissues, easing symptoms associated with menopause, preventing osteoporosis, and reducing the risk of heart disease. Isoflavone has also been used in the treatment and prevention of colon cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer.

    Negative Side Effects

    • While they are considered minor, some negative side effects have also been associated with using this supplement. Some of these side effects include upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation, reduced thyroid function, kidney stones, stomach pain, general weakness, and dizziness. These side effects are rare and do not affect a large amount of users.

    Important Safety Information

    • While isoflavone is considered to be a generally safe supplement, there have been cases where it has increased the risk of bladder cancer and lead to a decrease in thyroid hormone production. As a result, always consult with your doctor and consider all possible risks before beginning use of this supplement. If you are currently on a high fiber diet, it may interfere with the absorption of soy isoflavones and could counteract the benefits of the supplement.

    Use

    • Always use this supplement exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor and never in dosages larger than what has been recommended on the label. The supplement can be taken in either powder or capsule form and is usually administered in dosages between 25-200 mg per day, depending on the size and age of the individual. Isoflavone should always be stored at room temperature and away from sources of moisture.

    Warning

    • If you experience any of the aforementioned side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

If an overdose is suspected, contact the poison control center and head directly to the nearest emergency room.

Isoflavone is meant to treat the above ailments only and should never be used to treat any other medical condition unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.
