D-Ribose Side Effects

D-Ribose is used to supplement the diet. It has been used to help boost energy levels to those with certain genetic disorders. There have been some adverse side effects reported when using D-Ribose in the long term.
  1. Identification

    • D-Ribose is an energy source that the body gets from the food that is consumed daily. It is most likely beneficial for those with coronary artery disease, genetic disorders such as myoadenlate deaminase deficiency or MAD, and may be beneficial for those with the metobolic disorder McArtle's disease.

    Diabetes

    • D-Ribose is a sugar that is produced by the body. This makes it contraindicated for anyone who has diabetes or low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

    Gastrointestinal Discomfort

    • D-Ribose can cause stomach discomfort such as diarrhea, stomach pain and nausea. These side effects are usually mild and are relatively uncommon.

    Considerations

    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not take D-Ribose. It is unknown the effects this may have on the baby. If you are scheduled for surgery, stop taking D-Ribose for 2 weeks prior to surgery in order to avoid complications.

    Interactions

    • Medications for diabetes will interact with D-Ribose, causing an unsafe drop in blood sugar. If your doctor recommends you supplement with D-Ribose, your diabetes medication dosage may need to be altered. Be sure to monitor your blood sugar very closely while using D-Ribose. Alcohol can interact with D-Ribose, when combined it may cause an unsafe drop in blood sugar. Other medications that interact with this supplement are aspirin, Trilisate, Inderal, and Disalcid.

    Warning

    • It is important to speak with your doctor about supplementing with D-Ribose, especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions or are taking any medication.
