Risks of Amino Acid Supplements
-
Increases Muscle Mass
-
The amino acid gamma hydroxy butyrate (GHB), was largely marketed as a muscle strengthener and weight loss aid. It also was claimed to be a substitute of the now banned L-tryptophan. People who used GHB, especially athletes reported symptoms of vomiting, respiratory problems, seizures, drowsiness and semi-consciousness.
Blood Disorder-Eosinophiliamyalgia Syndrome (EMS)
-
Amino acids are often used to treat insomnia. L-tryptophan is the amino acid that helps to induce sleepiness. However, eosinophiliamyalgia syndrome (EMS) is associated with a bad batch of the L-tryptophan. It causes nausea, skin and blood disorders and has proved hazardous.
Improves Performance
-
The amino acid Tyrosine often is used by athletes to increase performance and energy. Dr. Richard J. Wurtman, professor of neuroscience and director of the Clinical Research Center at M.I.T, warns that those who use tyrosine to improve performance can fall victim to side effects such as rapid decrease in blood pressure.
Hypoglycemic Seizure
-
The amino acid L-carnitine also has serious side affects. It can alter the blood sugar levels, leading to a hypoglycemic seizure. It also can camouflage heart disease symptoms.
Observation
-
There is not as much scientific evidence on amino acid supplements as the manufacturers claim regarding their multi-faceted benefits. Most nutrition experts recommend that proper and well-balanced diet can compensate amino acids in the body. Excess consumption of amino acids may tamper with the hormonal and chemical processes in the body leading to health hazards. The FDA concluded that the dangers amino acid supplements pose is grave for humans if the isolated use of these were not limited.
