Because blue-green algae can assist in the accumulation of heavy metals found in contaminated water, the supplement may increase the body's lead, mercury and cadmium levels. One specific type of algae, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, has also been found to produce toxins in the body. Some patients have also reported allergic reactions to blue-green algae.
