Brain & Vitamin Nutrition
As a complex organ, the brain has specific nutritional needs. A good diet supports the brain. One vitamin group is crucial to neurological function: B vitamins.-
Support for Mental Health
-
Vitamin B6, or pyridoxine, is one essential nutrient. It is necessary for the production of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine or serotonin, and it plays a role in production of hormones. A deficiency in B6 has been linked to anxiety, depression and sleeplessness. B6 can be found in meat, poultry, dairy and whole grains.
Fuel For the Body
-
B vitamins help break down food consumed into energy the brain can use (glucose). Some B vitamins, such as B12, are found only in animal foods, so vegans and strict vegetarians might need a B12 supplement.
Energy and Focus
-
B6 is essential for the production of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine. Dopamine assists the brain in focusing. Children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who do not want to be on medication have been pointed to B6 and B12 supplements to increase the production of dopamine and enable the individual to focus. B6 has been found slightly more effective than some prescription ADHD medications.
B Vitamins and Physical Health
-
A deficiency of B Vitamins has been linked to Pellagra, insomnia, anemia and migraines. Deficiency in folic acid, specifically in pregnant women, has been linked to Spina bifida in fetuses and infants. Vegans and pregnant women are encouraged to take a complex B supplement.
Warning
-
Too much of the B vitamins-especially B6-can cause problems. An overabundance of B6 can cause problems in mental health. Do not take more than the daily recommended dosage of B6.
