Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10), also known as ubiquinone, is an enzyme found in all the body's cells and is important in helping the cells produce energy.

    • The main sources of CoQ-10 in the diet are oily fish, organ meats, and whole grains.

    Usefulness of CoQ-10 Supplements

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research has suggested that CoQ-10 supplements may help a number of medical conditions, including heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. CoQ-10 may also improve immunity, athletic performance, and longevity.

    Side Effects

    • The only side effect of CoQ10 supplements noted by the Maryland Medical Center is occasional stomach upset.

    Not for Pregnancy

    • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take CoQ-10 supplements because the safety of doing so is unknown.

    Drug Interactions

    • The University of Maryland Medical Center does list a number of possible drug interactions with CoQ-10 supplements, including daunorubicin and doxorubicin (two chemotherapy medications), blood pressure medications, and blood-thinning drugs.
