Minoxidil Effects

Minoxidil is a popular topical medicine that is commonly known by one of its brand names, which is Rogaine. It is a topical medication that is used to encourage and enhance hair growth for males that have male pattern baldness. It is intended to be applied directly to the scalp two times a day. There are various different effects, both positive and negative, of using this treatment to increase hair growth.
  1. Function

    • Minoxidil operates by widening the scalp's blood vessels. This in turn enhances the function of the hair follicles, and therefore encourages the growth of hair. This works to turn thinning hair on the head into thick and fast growing, healthy hair. This is the main intended effect of the medication.

    Common Side Effects

    • Other than the positive and desired effect of thicker and healthier hair, Minoxidil can also bring upon some side effects that are not as pleasant. There are a few common side effects of this topical medication, which are headache, and flaking, itchiness, dryness and redness of the scalp. If you experience any of these side effects and find them to be uncomfortable, or if they do not subside, you should let your doctor know what is happening. However, these side effects tend to be minor and short-lived.

    Severe Side Effects

    • The topical medicine can also bring upon some severe side effects as well, although they are very uncommon. These severe effects are very rapid or irregular heartbeat, chest ache, feeling lightheaded, dizziness and passing out. If you should experience any of these side effects, you need to immediately get emergency medical attention, as they could be dangerous.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Serious allergic reactions to Minoxidil are unlikely, but can also lead to some dangerous results. If you think that you might be going through an allergic reaction to Minoxidil, you need to get medical help as soon as possible. Some signs to be aware of include hives, the lips, face or tongue becoming swollen, the throat closing up, and having a hard time breathing.

    Warnings

    • Minoxidil is not intended to be applied onto scalps that are either irritated or sunburned. It also is not intended to be used in excessive amounts. As a result, it is always safe to simply use the recommended and appropriate amount of the medication. Doing otherwise could lead to it being absorbed by the body and causing some severe and potentially dangerous side effects.

    Caution

    • It is very important to be cautious when considering using this hair growth medication. You must consult your doctor before taking the medication. Your doctor must be made aware of your medical history, especially if you have or have had liver or kidney problems, allergies (particularly to any medicines) and any scalp-related conditions.
