Arginine Side Effects

Arginine is an amino acid in the body that plays a role cell in division, in the removal of ammonia from the body, and in the increase of growth hormones. Arginine also stimulates the action of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide relaxes the blood vessels, which improves circulation, supports heart health and decreases cholesterol. When the level of Arginine is low, a supplement may be required.

    • Arginine is an amino acid that is readily available from foods such as peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, raisins, corn, dairy products and chicken. Arginine is used as a growth hormone, a treatment for erectile dysfunction, and for the strengthening and toning of muscles. It is also used to improve cardiovascular conditions such as congestive heart failure and strokes. Arginine is available in tablet, capsule or intravenous forms.

    Side Effects

    • Arginine side effects include headaches, nausea and vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea. Asthma sufferers may find that their symptoms become worse when taking Arginine. Contact your doctor for advice if any of these symptoms occur.

    Other Side Effects

    • Other side effects may include low blood pressure and imbalance in the electrolytes such as, high potassium, high blood urea, high chloride, and low sodium and phosphate. In addition there may be low back pain, numbness and restless leg syndrome (legs feel uncomfortable, jittery and painful). Seek medical advice if you experience any of these symptoms.

    Additional Side Effects

    • If you are taking a blood thinner or have a bleeding disorder, consult your doctor before taking Arginine as may have an increased risk of bleeding. Diabetics who take Arginine must monitor their blood sugar levels closely because Arginine can raise blood sugar levels. It can also increase production of stomach acid, which results in increased symptoms of heartburn and stomach ulcers.

    Allergic Reaction

    • An allergic reaction may a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include a rash or hives with itching. Other symptoms are swelling of the face, mouth, tongue or throat accompanied by difficulty breathing. Seek immediate emergency care if you experience any of these symptoms.

    Warning

    • Discuss your medical history with your doctor including all medications, herbal products or over-the-counter drugs you take. Arginine is contra-indicated in individuals with a history of kidney disease, heart attack, genital herpes, or women who are pregnant or breast feeding.
