About Cancer Prevention with IP6

For years, experts have suggested a high-fiber diet may protect against cancer. Recent studies have found that Ip6 (inositol hexaphospate), a component of fiber, may be responsible for the protective effects. Ip6 is found in the fiber from whole grains and legumes. However, a supplement that contains both Ip6 and inositol may be more effective than acquiring Ip6 from food.
  1. Inositol

    • Taking Ip6 and inositol together may be much more effective that taking Ip6 alone. Inositol is the "backbone" of the Ip6 molecule. Each of the six carbon atoms in a molecule of inositol can bind with another molecule called a phosphate. When all six carbons are occupied, Ip6 is the result. If, however, another available inositol molecule is present, three of the phosphates will leave the Ip6 and attach to the new molecule (now called Ip3). Studies have found that Ip3 is better able to get inside the cancer cells and immune cells. To ensure optimum Ip3 formation, Dr. Shamsuddin of University of Maryland recommends a ratio of 4:1 of Ip6 to inositol. (See Reference 1)

    How It Works

    • When Ip3 levels are low (as is the case in cancer cells), the cells replicate out of control. When adequate Ip3 is present, the cancer cells turn themselves off. The combination of Ip6 and inositol acts as an effective antioxidant and immune booster. The pair is especially beneficial for stimulating natural killer cells.

    Types of Cancer

    • Laboratory studies show that the combination of Ip6 and inositol demonstrates anti-cancer effects against virtually all types of cancer. In human cases of breast, lung and colon cancer, Ip6 and inositol were found to be effective at killing the cancer cells.

    Dosage

    • For those with cancer or who are at a high risk of cancer, the recommended daily dose is 4,800 to 7,200 milligrams of Ip6 along with 1,200 to 1,800 milligrams of inositol (to be taken on an empty stomach). (See Reference 1)

    Toxicity

    • Studies have found no negative effects of Ip6 supplementation, even at high doses. In addition, further studies have concluded Ip6 and inositol are safe to use in combination with conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. Some studies have reported that the combination may enhance the effects of these therapies.
