Avocado Oil Health Benefits
Avocado oil is among the list of "good oils" used in cooking. The compounds found in avocado oil are derived from the beneficial variety of fatty acids, and more than half of the fat in avocados is monounsaturated, which is considered among the "good" fats. Avocado oil also contains a high amount of vitamin E, which works as an antioxidant, as well as plant sterols, which may help lower cholesterol.-
Weight Control
-
Avocado oil may be helpful in maintaining weight because of its high content of monounsaturated fat, which, unlike saturated fat, boosts metabolism. Because it is also high in fat (90 percent of an avocado's calories are derived from fat), it creates a "full" feeling, which can lead to less food intake, especially of food that may be high in sugar and saturated fat.
Vitamins and Minerals
-
The avocado and its oil are rich in nearly 20 minerals and vitamins, including B6, which is essential for healthy red blood cells, the nervous system, gums and teeth. Other nutrients include iron, potassium, lutein and folate. Avocado oil also contains potassium, pantothenic acid, copper and the phytonutrient lutein, which helps boost eye health as we age.
Antioxidants
-
Avocado and avocado oil are packed with several antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, as well as beta carotene. These antioxidants can fight free radicals that help create a variety of illnesses and conditions. By fighting free radicals, foods high in antioxidants provide a healthy defense against cataracts, cancer, high cholesterol and arthritis.
Blood Pressure
-
Because avocado oil is high in monounsaturated fat and lower in saturated and polyunsaturated fats, it may be beneficial in lowering blood pressure. (Monounsaturated fat is the only fat connected with lowering blood pressure.)
Source of Fiber
-
The avocado boasts a high percentage of insoluble (2.7 percent) and soluble (2.1 percent) fiber. The high fiber content helps in a variety of ways, including digestion and the prevention of some cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure.
