Ingredients in Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein

Optimum Nutrition offers a variety of nutritional supplements from amino acids to protein powder to vitamin and minerals. They manufacture and sell 100 percent Whey Gold Standard, which has been touted as the number one protein on the market. It is a combination of whey isolate and concentrate with a designer enzyme, aminogen, which helps break down the protein for better utilization. This product can be taken throughout the day as needed or after workout.
  1. Whey Protein

    • Whey isolate and whey concentrate is a milk derived protein source. The isolate form is highly filtered through various methods to reduce fat and carbohydrates. Whey isolate is approximately 90-97 percent protein by weight. Concentrate is a less filtered form of whey that still has fat and carbohydrates. Whey concentrate can vary from 40-89 percent protein by weight. This product does not report the type filtration of whey isolate or concentrate. Whey protein has been shown to augment the effects of resistance training and elevate plasma amino acid content and preserve muscle mass. This could be contributed to the high content of leucine. The effects of whey are heightened when consumed shortly after training.

    Whey Peptides

    • Whey peptides are predigested proteins that allow rapid absorption. This is because the peptides bypass the stomach and are absorbed through the intestines.

    Aminogen

    • Aminogen is a plant based designer enzyme that has been clinically shown to increase the effectiveness of protein supplementation. Clinical studies have shown that aminogen increases branch-chain amino acids by 250 percent, plasma amino levels 100 percent and nitrogen retention by 32 percent opposed to protein alone. These studies were provided by the manufacturer. Independent studies are not available at this time.

    Lecithin

    • Lecithin is a soy product used to increase the mixing of product in liquids.

    Lactase

    • Lactase is a enzyme that breaks down lactose (milk sugar). Whey isolate has little to no lactose, but whey concentrate does contain this sugar. Lactase can also benefit lactose intolerant individuals.

    Warning
