Malic Acid Benefits
Malic acid is a substance that helps the body derive adenosine troposphere, or ATP. Alan Gaby, M.D., co-author of "The Natural Pharmacy," considers malic acid to be the "energy current" that runs through the body. A few studies have concluded that the use of malic acid may be beneficial for patients suffering from fibromyalgia, as well as other conditions.-
Fibromyalgia
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, fibromyalgia is a chronic condition typified by severe pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. Fatigue is also another condition that can appear randomly. Tender spots can also be found on the body when slight pressure is applied to them.
The use of malic acid with fibromyalgia patients is documented, but the research was not conducted in a controlled environment. Gaby states that this research shows that the use of 1,200 to 2,400 mg malic acid taken in conjunction with 300 to 600 mg magnesium may prove beneficial for fibromyalgia patients.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
-
Because malic acid is the energy current running through the body, it may also be beneficial for people who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). The use of malic acid supplements can boost the energy level, especially after exercise. Since CFS sufferers feel a loss of energy, malic acid may be useful to help treat this condition. The dosage of malic acid for CFS is the same as that of the fibromyalgia patient.
Foods
-
The benefits of malic acid can be found in sources other than supplements. Many foods, for example, contain malic acid. Fruit and vegetables all contain this substance, however, apples contain the largest amount of malic acid. Gaby states that malic acid may also be known by the name "apple acid." Fruits that are especially recommended for their malic acid content include pineapples, apricots, apples, gooseberries, raspberries, cherries and lemons.
Supplementation
-
Healthy people do not need to supplement their diet with malic acid because healthy bodies produce malic acid naturally. Fibromyalgia patients and people suffering from CFS are recommended to take a malic acid supplement. Other conditions that might improve with the use of malic acid supplements are hypoxia-related illnesses, respiratory problems, energy deficiency and circulatory insufficiency.
Side Effects and Interactions
-
Malic acid has been shown safe for those with fibromyalgia, CFS, respiratory problems, energy deficiency, circulatory insufficiency and hypoxia-related conditions .
To date, there have been no reported side effects of drug interactions with malic acid as long as it is used in moderation. It is always important to seek the advice of a medical professional before using any supplements.
