Benefits of Blue Green Algae
Fans of blue-green algae call it a "super food" because it is rich in protein, calcium, iron, chlorophyll, vitamins and other nutrients. Blue-green algae products, such as spirulina, can be purchased in a fresh dried form, and in tablets, capsules, extract, flakes and powder. Blue-green algae also can be grown at home.-
Immune System Booster
-
Phycocyanin, the blue pigment in this algae, is a powerful antioxidant for free radical scavenging, according to a 2004 review of studies in "Life Sciences" journal (see link in Resources). This makes blue-green algae a great immune system booster.
Cancer Prevention
-
A study in a Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications issue from 2000 (also cited in the "Life Sciences" review)also noted that phycocyanin inhibits the growth of certain cancer cells.
Anti-Aging
-
Additionally, free radicals are indicated to be partially responsible for negative effects of aging, according to the Mayo Clinic (see link in Resources). The action of blue-green algae against free radicals is of benefit here also.
Anti-Inflammatory
-
Phycocyanin reduces inflammation, according to a study published in a 2007 issue of "Life Sciences." Other anti-inflammatory substances in blue-green algae include beta carotene, lycopene and lutein.
Detoxification
-
Blue-green algae are a concentrated source of chlorophyll, the green pigment, which is recognized for its regenerating and immune-enhancing properties.
