Glucosamine Chondroitin Sulfate Side Effects

Taking glucosamine chondroitin sulfate may help with osteoarthritis and many other bone and muscle disorders (and it's available for both humans and pets). But, before you start taking this nutritional supplement, learn about the possible side effects, such as gastrointestinal discomfort and changes in glucose levels.
  1. Intestinal Discomforts

    • The most widely reported side effect of taking glucosamine chondroitin sulfate are gastrointestinal-related, including diarrhea, indigestion, heartburn, flatulence, stomach pain, change in appetite and nausea. Many of these symptoms are alleviated at least partially by taking glucosamine chondroitin sulfate with a meal.

    Diabetes Complications

    • According to reports from Mayo Clinic, the effect of glucosamine chondroitin sulfate on glucose levels is uncertain. In animals it has a glucose lowering effect so it is presumable that glucose levels in people could also be altered. For the diabetic, additional monitoring of glucose levels is indicated, and use of this supplement should be monitored by a doctor. Hypoglycemics should also be cautious of their blood sugar level.

    Heart and Blood

    • Glucosamine chondroitin sulfate is very high in sodium so those with heart disease and are on low sodium diets should check with a physician before adding glucosamine chondroitin sulfate to their diets. People with bleeding disorders should be aware that this nutritional supplement may also thin blood.

    Allergy

    • People with allergies to shellfish should exercise caution when taking glucosamine chondroitin sulfate which is made from seashells. There is controversy on the allergic potential of glucosamine chondroitin sulfate, which is derived from the carbohydrate in seashells, as allergic reactions are caused by proteins in seashells. As with all medications there is a possibility of allergic reaction or sensitivity.

    Eyes

    • In dogs, there is an increased risk of cataracts. This may also be associated with the age of the animal or patient taking glucosamine chondroitin sulfate, not due to the supplement itself. If you are taking glucosamine chondroitin sulfate, be aware of any changes in vision or eye pressure.

    Children, Pregnant or Nursing Mothers

    • The FDA doesn't regulate glucosamine chondroitin sulfate, as it is a nutritional supplement not a prescribed medication in the US. Testing on glucosamine chondroitin sulfate excreted in breast milk has not been done, and its effect on unborn fetuses has not been evaluated. Glucosamine chondroitin sulfate is not suggested for use in children due to the limited testing done.

    Other Rare Side Effects

    • There have been extremely rare reports of dangerous side effects such as liver inflammation, immune system changes, interstitial nephritis, reduced kidney function and hepatitis. Before starting any medication or nutritional supplement, consult your regular physician, and check for drug interactions with your current prescriptions.
