Recipes for Meal Replacement Drinks
A sit-down meal isn't always an option. You can choose a healthy alternative to a meal instead of picking up fast food or grabbing a candy bar. Homemade meal replacements offer variety from having the same protein shakes repeatedly and usually can be made with just a few ingredients.-
Banana Bread Shake
-
The banana bread shake is a healthy homemade alternative to a prepared meal replacement shake. You will need two scoops of whey protein, one banana, 1/2 cup of cooked oatmeal, 3/4 cup of bran flakes, a bottle of water and a small amount of brown sugar to sweeten the mix. Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. This is much healthier than eating banana bread but can satisfy that craving for morning cake.
Fruit Meal Replacement Drink
-
For this smoothie you will need 1 cup of skim or low-fat milk, 1/4 cup of nonfat dry milk, 1/4 cup Splenda or other artificial sweetener, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, a dash of nutmeg, one peeled orange, one cored and quartered apple, one cup of frozen mixed fruit and one cup of spinach. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour immediately into two tall glasses to share and enjoy.
Chocolate Coffee Shake
-
This meal replacement drink is good for coffee lovers. You will need 2 cups of Alpine Milk Chocolate Protein Delite, 1 cup of skim milk, five ice cubes, 1 cup of water and a spoonful of instant coffee. Mix all of this together in a blender and drink. The added caffeine from the coffee will give you an extra boost.
Create Your Own
-
You can create your own meal replacement drinks by following a few simple ideas. The base for your shake will be a protein powder. The best choices are whey protein, egg white or soy proteins. Then choose a liquid, being careful to pay attention to sugars. Soy, rice and almond milk are all good choices. You can use yogurt if you would like a thicker shake. Next, choose additional ingredients for flavor and sweetening--again, watch the sugar. Good choices include honey and fruit. Experiment with different fruit and vegetables to find something that you enjoy.
