Pro & Cons of Fish Oil Capsules
A lot of attention has been given to Omega-3 Fatty Acids -- what they are, how they benefit you and how to get them into your diet. One way that many people choose to get their dose of Omega 3s is through fish oil supplements, which generally contain two of the three types of Omega-3s. There are many health benefits that may result from the regular use of these supplements, from a healthier heart to an easier pregnancy. However, there are also some risks, and it's important to understand the potential side effects before taking the supplements.-
Blood Pressure
-
Fish oil capsules contain docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA. A patient with high blood pressure who takes these supplements may notice a blood pressure reduction. Also, people with peripheral vascular disease (PVD) can use fish oil supplements to potentially help relieve claudication. However, with the high levels of DHA that need to be consumed for this to happen, some side effects may occur, such as a greater risk of bleeding.
Heart Health
-
When used in conjunction with other heart medications, fish oil has been shown to reduce the occurrence of most types of heart attack. Several studies also show that regular fish oil supplement can slow down your resting heart rate, according to the Mayo Clinic. Additionally, fish oil may help to correct an irregular heartbeat.
Pregnancy
-
Fish oil supplements can be a great help to an expectant mother, especially in her third trimester. Increasing the amount of DHA for both mother and baby makes for easier and safer deliveries. DHA also helps to improve the fetus' vision and can even improve the child's problem-solving skills later in life. Early research seems to lead to the conclusion that increased DHA can also have an effect on a smaller body mass index and birth weight for the baby.
Cancer
-
According to the Harvard Institute of Public Health, there is promising research that shows a link between a higher consumption of DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and a lowered occurrence of prostate cancer in men. However, these are very preliminary studies, and much more research will be needed to see if there is an actual link between the two.
Risks and Warnings
-
Fish oil supplements are an excellent way of getting in your Omega-3 fatty acids. However, there are a few risks and side effects that can occur. The most common are gastrointestinal issues -- stomachaches and diarrhea can happen, especially soon after beginning to take the supplements. Many people dislike the aftertaste of fish oil. Additionally, fish oil may increase the amount of Vitamins A and D in your system to an unhealthy level. Depending on the dosage, fish oil supplements may also increase the amount of "bad cholesterol" in your system. As with any supplement or vitamin, it's a good idea to talk with your doctor before beginning to take the oil on a regular basis.
