What Is the Chemical Formula in Rolaids?

Rolaids is an antacid that works on ridding the system of heartburn, upset stomach, bloating and gas pressure caused by foods and sometimes stress. There are three types of Rolaids: regular strength, extra strength and multi-symptom. Rolaids are available in tablets and soft chews. The chemicals in Rolaids are common in all antacid medications, but the strength and combination are different from its competitors.

  1. Inactive Ingredients

    • The inactive ingredients in Rolaids soft chews consist of flavorings made from corn starch, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, glycerin, hydrogenated coconut oil, nonfat dry milk, sucrose, soy lecithin, with FD&C red #40 aluminum lake for the wild cherry flavor. Other inactive ingredients include calcium, magnesium and milk. The other flavors include cherry and peppermint with ingredients of acesulfame potassium, dextrose excipient, magnesium state, pregelatinized starch, maltodextrin, and soy protein isolate with D&C red #27 aluminum lake for the Cherry flavor. The Cool Mint flavor includes FD&C blue #1 and Berry has the FD&C red #3.

    Calcium & Magnesium

    • Each Rolaids product contains up to 270 mg of calcium and 55 mg of magnesium. Calcium is an important nutrient that helps with developing and maintaining bone health with 99 percent of calcium found in the bones. Magnesium is found throughout the body, with 50 percent in bones, with the other 50 percent supporting cells of body tissues and organs. Magnesium helps support nerve function, healthy heart, regulation of blood sugar, and can even help prevent diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

    Calcium carbonate

    • One of the active ingredients in Rolaids formulas is calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate is a natural substance comprising approximately 4 percent of the earth's crust and is used not only as a dietary calcium supplement but also as antacid, a phosphate binder and in medicine tablets as a base. It is widely used in other products including toothpaste, dry mix dessert mixes, wine, baking powder and dough. Calcium carbonate counteracts acid.

    Magnesium Hydroxide

    • Magnesium hydroxide in Rolaids is used for the relief of indigestion and acid stomach. It is beneficial to the functioning of healthy nerves and tissue cells. But magnesium hydroxide is also commonly used as a laxative. Caution should be taken in using magnesium hydroxide if you have experienced issues with your stomach including pain and vomiting. Rolaids includes 135 mg of magnesium hydroxide per tablet, if you experience abdominal pains, severe nausea, stop taking Rolaids and seek medical attention.

    Simethicone

    • The mulit-symptom Rolaids also contains 60 mg of simethicone. Simethicone is used in several products for the relief of gas by binding the smaller bubbles in the intestines into larger ones and expelling them through belching or passing through flatus. The process is believed to be beneficial in the relief of abdominal pain by decreasing the amount of gas bubbles and causing the larger bubbles to be passed out of the body. There are no known drug interactions or side effects.
