A tremendous amount of supplements are on the market today that assist bodybuilders in gaining a competitive advantage and improving their personal performance. Most supplements are unregulated by the FDA and are taken at a bodybuilder's personal discretion and risk. Although bodybuilding supplements might bring about images of steriods and shady operations, a few supplements have been shown to provide a safe and effective benefit to bodybuilding if used properly.

In bodybuilding, creatine is used to increase anaerobic energy, which allows you to lift weights for longer periods of time. It also helps volumize the muscle cells with water, giving them a fuller look.

    • Bodybuilding training takes tremendous hard work, long hours and dedication. Maintaining a rigorous training schedule day in and day out can take a toll on the body and cause compromised immunity. A weak immune system can lead to colds and infections that can make workouts much harder to endure. Multivitamins are used for their ability to supply the body with key vitamins and minerals that can promote good health and also keep the body energized.

    • Glutamine is another powdered formula that can have several different effects on the body. It is most commonly used to preserve lean muscle mass and help kickstart muscle recovery. For this reason, it is often times mixed with protein shakes after workouts. It also helps boost the body's immunity and can replenish glycogen storage in the body without the presence of carbohydrates.

    • Supplements should be used as directed. More does not necessarily mean better. For example, overdosing on creatine or protein powder can lead to abdominal cramps, gas and bloating. All supplements should be taken with adequate amounts of water. The kidneys rely on this water to help process and flush the supplements through the body. You should also be aware of all the ingredients that supplements contain. They are often times sweetened with artificial sugars that can cause an adverse reaction. Also, not all supplements or their inactive ingredients have been adequately tested for safety and effectiveness. It is best to error on the side of safety. If you don't know what you are putting in your body, don't use it.
