Gamma oryzanol is a blend of plant chemicals (sterols) and ferulic acid esters. Gamma oryzanol is a natural part of barley oils, corn and rice bran. It is often used as a nutritional and dietary supplement for bodybuilders. It treats conditions including underactive thyroid, heartburn, injuries, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting. High amounts of gamma oryzanol taken on a daily basis (up to 600 mg a day) for a few months at a time can lead to side effects such as irritability, hot flushes, dry mouth, drowsiness, lightheaded feelings and dizziness.

Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone

One possible but not very common side effect of using gamma oryzanol is the chance of reduction of the body's production of thyroid-stimulating hormone, which is often abbreviated as TSH. This is a peptide hormone that helps to regulate the endocrine gland's function.

Women who are either pregnant, planning to get pregnant in the very near future or are nursing babies are advised against using gamma oryzanol for any type of reason.
