What are the Side Effects of Flush Niacin?
Niacin, also known as vitamin B-3, is an essential nutrient for the healthy function of all parts of the body. Although sustained release, or "flush-free" formulas are available, standard niacin is known to cause some side effects, especially in larger doses. Most can be avoided by taking niacin with food or switching to a sustained-release formula.-
Flushing
-
Flushing of the skin, especially in clothed areas, is one of the most common side effects associated with standard ("flush") niacin. It rarely lasts more than 15 minutes.
Other Skin Effects
-
In addition to flushing, niacin may cause rash, a "prickly" sensation, dryness, skin flaking or persistent itching.
Pregnancy Effects
-
Very large doses of niacin during pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of birth defects and other complications.
Hyperglycemia
-
Niacin temporarily raises blood sugar levels. For people with diabetes, large doses of niacin can cause blood-glucose levels to become dangerously high.
Serious Side Effects
-
When taken in extremely high doses, standard niacin formulations can cause liver problems, visual distortion and cardiac arrhythmia.
