What Is Beta Glucan?

Beta-glucans are polysaccharides. Beta-glucans are biological defense modifiers (BDM). They activate macrophage immune cells, as well as T-cells and B-cells to boost the immune system and fight off infections. Supplements contain insoluble beta-glucans.
  1. Benefits

    • Beta-glucan use is associated with a stronger immune system and faster wound healing. Specifically, it kills bacteria present in the blood (septic shock), and helps prevent infection. Its anti-tumor properties may help cancer patients. It may also lower cholesterol, ease cardiovascular problems and help diabetics manage their blood pressure.

    Natural Sources

    • Beta-glucan is found naturally in baker's yeast and in certain mushrooms (maitake and shiitake). It is also in oat fiber and barley.

    Dosage

    • Possible dosage of beta glucan varies widely, from 40 mg to 3000 mg daily. Suggested dosage is dependent on body weight.

    Age

    • There have been no studies on the efficacy or safety of beta-glucan use in children under 18 years of age. Its use for minors is not recommended.

    Warning

    • When taken orally, beta-glucan has a history of safety. However, topical use and injections have not been as extensively studied. Intravenous use may cause dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, hives, headaches and changes in blood pressure. Beta-glucan use is also not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
