Side Effects of Whey Protein

Whey protein is a protein derived from cow's milk. It can be taken in powder, liquid or pill form and is easily digested by the body. Whey protein is used by athletes and body builders to help build lean muscle mass. While whey protein is beneficial to the body, there are also side effects that can occur with its use.
  1. Lactose

    • Whey protein concentrate contains up to six percent lactose; people who are lactose intolerant or suffer from allergies to dairy products cannot use whey protein concentrate. Whey protein is also available in an isolate, which contains only one percent lactose.

    Bloating

    • Excess protein that is not processed properly in the stomach turns to gas and causes bloating.

    Osteoporosis

    • Osteoporosis is a disease in which mineral bone density is decreased. Excess use of whey protein has been found to lead to osteoporosis in the joints.

    Kidneys

    • The kidneys filter the body's fluids. Long-term and excessive use of whey protein can lead to the increased deterioration of the kidneys.

    Liver

    • The liver helps the body synthesize proteins and plays a major role in metabolism. Excessive use of whey protein increases the amounts of protein the liver must process, leading to liver damage.
