How to Pick a Fat Blocker Diet Pill

Fat blockers are a type of diet pill that works by blocking part of the dietary fat you consume from being absorbed by your body. How much is blocked depends on the type of pill you’re taking, its strength and what type of diet you’re in to begin with. Before you spend time and money on fat blockers, you should understand that they are designed to block fat from your diet but will not burn or get rid of any fat already in your body.

Look into Alli, the only FDA-approved over-the-counter fat blocker. Alli is actually a softer version of Orlistat (about 50 percent softer) and it only works when taken along with a specific type of diet suggested by the makers of the pill.

Talk to your doctor about Orlistat, a prescription drug similar to Alli. Orlistat is sold under the brand name Xenical and is available only for people who have a large amount of weight to lose (over 50 pounds).

Use natural fat blockers, such as chitosan. While not as effective as prescription pills, they also don’t produce the same serious side effects. Natural fat blockers are available at health food stores or drugstores.

Read the fine print. Most fat blocker diet pills produce serious side effects, such as diarrhea, gas with oily spotting, abdominal pain and back pain. Most of these effects will not go away, but will last as long as you are taking the pills and consuming more than the recommended amount of dietary fat (5 grams per meal).
