Artichoke Extract Precautions
-
Side Effects
-
While 95 percent of people are able to use artichoke extract without negative side effects, one in 100 people report an increase in gas and flatulence when taking the supplement. Some people also experience feelings of increased hunger or weakness. Talk to your doctor to determine if artichoke extract is right for you.
Allergic Reactions
-
Do not take artichoke extract if you are allergic to artichokes or other things containing cynarin, the main active ingredient in artichoke extract. Avoid artichoke extract if you are allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family, or if you are allergic to food dyes or preservatives. You may be allergic to artichoke extract if you are allergic to plants such as chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies or ragweed.
Gallstones and Gallbladder Disease
-
Do not take artichoke extract if you have gallstones or gallbladder disease or disorders. Because artichoke extract increases bile production and gallbladder contractions, increased stress from stones or disorders could cause the gallbladder to rupture. Gallbladder disorders include blocked bile ducts.
Other
-
Pregnant women and nursing mothers should not begin taking artichoke extract without the permission of their doctor or physician, as the safety of the supplement has not been fully assessed for this group. Artichoke extract safety has also not been determined for children under 12 years old, or people with liver and kidney disease. For this reason, these groups should also avoid artichoke extract unless they are taking it under the supervision of their doctor.
Consult Your Physician
-
Always consult your physician or natural health care practitioner before beginning any herbal or dietary supplement. Make sure that your physician is aware of any other medications, prescription or non-prescription, before beginning artichoke extract. This includes vitamins and other herbal supplements. Ask your pharmacist to recommend a quality brand and product to ensure safety, and always adhere to the recommended dosage.
