The Effects of Os-Cal

Produced by the company GlaxoSmithKline, Os-Cal, also known as Os-Cal 500 or calcium carbonate, is a dietary supplement. Made out of the oyster shell powder, Os-Cal is found in tablet and chewable form. Some varieties of the supplement come with nutrients such as vitamin D and magnesium, nutrients that may enhance calcium absorption and bone strength, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements.

  1. Nutrient Delivery

    • The primary use of Os-Cal is as a calcium supplement. Calcium supplements help the body build strong bones and teeth, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. When used as a dietary supplement, the U.S. National Library of medicine suggests taking Os-Cal either with or immediately following meals. An 8 oz. glass of water should also be consumed after taking Os-Cal supplements. Chewable tablets work best when chewed thoroughly rather than swallowed hole. Tablets should not be chewed. Consumers should take the supplement as directed on the label, avoiding large doses.

    • Drugs.com notes that Os-Cal can also be used to treat hypocalcemia, a condition that occurs when the blood is low in calcium. Low blood calcium potentially influences heart, muscle and nerve functioning. Os-Cal also works as an antacid by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach. People use antacids to relieve conditions such as heartburn, indigestion and upset stomach.

    Side Effects Os-Cal

    • According to Drugs.com, calcium carbonate may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as upset stomach, belching, constipation and stomach pain. The supplement may also cause a metallic taste, dry mouth and appetite loss. As with all supplements and medicines, severe side effects may occur. If drowsiness, weakness or unremitting vomiting occurs, then consult a health care professional. These conditions are more likely to occur in people who take large amounts of Os-Cal, stay on the supplement for long periods or have an impaired kidney function. Some people are allergic to calcium carbonate. Consumers should watch for signs of allergic reactions such as hives, breathing difficulty and facial swelling.

    Precautions

    • If you have a history of kidney stones, kidney disease or parathyroid gland disorder, then consult a doctor before taking Os-Cal. Calcium carbonate may interfere with drugs and supplements such as antacids, vitamin D supplements, tetracycline, digoxin and phenytoin, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Pregnant and nursing women should also contact a physician before taking the supplement. Children should only take Os-Cal under the supervision of a physician.
