The Difference Between DHEA & DHEA 7 Keto

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone that is naturally occurring in the human body, as it is secreted by the adrenal gland. DHEA levels begin to decrease after age 30, and are typically low in people with certain conditions, including anorexia, AIDS, type 2 diabetes and end-stage kidney disease. The 7-KETO form of DHEA is a synthetic hormone that is derived from DHEA.
  1. Uses of DHEA

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, there is evidence confirming the efficacy of DHEA in treating adrenal insufficiency, depression, labor induction and a form of lupus called systemic lupus erythematosus.

    Risks of DHEA

    • DHEA increases the production of estrogen and testosterone, the human sex hormones. As a result, it can promote the growth of undiagnosed prostate or breast cancer. Higher levels of DHEA have been detected in patients with breast cancer and endometrial cancer.

    Benefits of 7-KETO DHEA

    • The 7-KETO form of DHEA is a derivative that was discovered by Henry Lardy, PhD, a scientist with the National Academy of Sciences. The most immediate benefit of 7-KETO is that it does not cause the body to produce more estrogen or testosterone, thereby potentially removing the risks of accelerated cancer growth.

    Studies

    • According to the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago, many animal studies involving DHEA have been performed, showing it to prevent muscle loss and improve T-cell count in primates with simian HIV, as well as other benefits. While these studies may prove to be promising, very few clinical human studies have been performed. Some or all of the preliminary benefits may not carry over to a different species. As with any supplement or medication, be sure to consult your physician before taking DHEA or 7-KETO DHEA.
