General Restrictions

The first phase of the diet has the strictest food restrictions. No starches are allowed, including bread, cereal, oatmeal, pasta and all baked goods.
Specific Limits

The first phase limits dairy to a half-cup of plain fat-free yogurt. You must avoid all other dairy, such as milk and cheeses.
Additional Restrictions

During phase one, fruits and vegetables containing starches, such as potatoes, are also off limits.
Liquids

The South Beach Diet limits caffeine intake to one serving per day, and alcohol is not permitted.
Lessened Restrictions

The second phase of the South Beach Diet eases restrictions but still bans refined starches, canned fruits and juices, and starchy vegetables, such as potatoes, corn and carrots.
Maintenance

Phase three of the South Beach Diet is about maintaining your new weight; you should still avoid the foods from phase two.
