What Fruits Have Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring pigment that gives foods an orange, yellow or red color. Astaxanthin is considered a carotenoid, a class of antioxidants that includes lycopene, beta carotene and lutein. Doctor Boon Chew of Washington University has done research showing that astaxanthin stimulates the human immune system and can decrease DNA damage. Astaxanthin is found in salmon, lobster, shrimp, algae and dark-colored fruits and vegetables.

    • Mangoes are rich in astaxanthin. This fruit also contains vitamins such as A and C and minerals like calcium.

    Guava

    • Guava is another fruit high in astaxanthin. It is considered a super food because it has many vitamins and nutrients and is high in antioxidants.

    Bilberry

    • Bilberry is high in astaxanthin. This berry is grown mostly in Russia, Finland and Poland.

    Acai

    • The acai berry comes from the acai palm. It grows in Central and South America and is considered a super fruit because it is rich in antioxidants and vitamins. Acai has a short shelf life when fresh, so it's usually sold in powdered form.

    Queen Garnet Plum

    • The queen garnet plum is a high antioxidant plum developed and grown in Australia. It's supposed to be higher in vitamins and antioxidants than regular plums.

    Blueberries

    • Blueberries are high in astaxanthin as well as other antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin. They also contain important minerals.

    Cranberry

    • Like most berries, cranberries are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Astaxanthin is present in craberries, along with vitamin C. Cranberry juice is sometimes recommended when a person has a urinary tract infection.
