Why Are Iron Tablets Incompatible with Dairy Products & Caffeine?

Inhibition of iron absorption is the primary reason to avoid dairy products, as well as food and beverages containing caffeine. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, iron-deficient people are already at risk and should avoid tea, coffee, milk and other dairy products.
  1. Effects

    • A U.S. Department of Agriculture study found that the component casein (a protein containing phosphoric acid) in cow's milk inhibits iron absorption.

    Identification

    • Polyphenols are substances in caffeine, tea and coffee that interferes with iron absorption.

    Considerations

    • Insufficient iron absorption is also linked to the phytates found in whole grains, nuts and legumes. Excessive consumption of antacids interferes with the body's ability to metabolize iron.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Taking iron pills on an empty stomach will ensure optimal absorption, and consuming foods containing vitamin C may further increase absorption.

    Causes

    • Needing an iron supplement is a result of poor nutrition or an increased demand for the nutrient during pregnancy, rapid growth or blood loss.

    Warning

    • Inadequate levels of iron can lead to anemia, which requires treatment. Symptoms include fatigue, pale skin, unusual cravings, poor appetite, cold hands or feet, headaches and dizziness.
