Fish Oil Ingredients

Fish oil is a dietary supplement generally available in pill form that is often used to help regulate cholesterol levels. Regulation of these levels can help offset the effects of coronary heart disease, and the American Heart Association recommends that individuals consume at least 1 gram of fish oil daily. Though its benefits are significant, fish oil is simple in terms of ingredients.
  1. Omega-3 Acids

    • Fish oil typically contains two types of Omega-3 acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial fatty acids. Unsaturated in nature, they are often considered nutritionally vital to your overall health, particularly in terms of the heart. The benefits of Omega-3 acids include increased cardiovascular health, a healthier immune system and better brain function.

    Eicosapentaenoic Acid

    • Fish absorb EPA from the algae they eat and has very significant health benefits. It has been known to lower inflammation and even work as an antidepressant, lowering the risk of suicidal behavior. Elaine Hardman of the Journal of Nutrition has suggested that EPA improves the response and eventual prognosis of patients undergoing chemotherapy.

    Docosahexaenoic Acid

    • DHA, like EPA, is produced by algae and shares many of the same health benefits. (Fish oil manufacturers often process DHA directly from farmed algae rather than from fish.) It has been shown to by a cancer inhibitor, particularly colon cancer, and is often used as a dietary supplement for pregnant women, as it has been shown to increase the visual acuity of infants. DHA is also found in baby formula and several foods, including milk and yogurt.
