Zeolite Uses
-
Collectors
-
Including zeolite in a rock and mineral collection is a popular use of this mineral (See Reference 1). Zeolite enjoys some degree of rarity which makes its presence in a collection valuable. Additionally, the mineral is quite attractive and displays complex patterns and shapes.
Detoxification
-
In liquid form, zeolite is often used to remove toxins and metals from the body (See References 2 and 3). It is sold as a food supplement, not a drug, and purports to strengthen the immune system. Some believe that zeolite has an antiviral benefit and thus it is sometimes used to prevent common cold or flu symptoms. Other similar uses include reduction in symptoms associated with allergies and to help balance pH levels for more healthy living. In agriculture, zeolite is sometimes added to livestock feed to remove harmful elements that endanger animals.
Ion Exchange
-
Ion exchange is a special property of the silicon oxide construction of zeolite (See Reference 1). This process has a variety of uses but is most often found in the functionality of water softeners. When used as a filter, zeolite traps calcium in water and replaces it with sodium ions. This removes the qualities of hard water and distributes soft water throughout a house or building.
Odor Removal
-
Just as zeolite can exchange calcium for sodium ions, it may also do the opposite. Its unique chemical structure can be utilized to trap ions produced by odors and other toxins and to let the air or other substance filter through without them. Zeolite is often used to clean city water before it is distributed to the public.
Aquariums
-
Various products are available for aquariums which use zeolite to treat the water (See Reference 1). Since aquarium water is sensitive to odors, discoloration and contamination, zeolite improves the experience for both fish and owner. Ammonia is a particularly common toxin in aquariums and is easily removed by zeolite.
