Why Can't You Take Iron Pills With Coffee?

Iron pills are a necessity for people who struggle with iron deficiency anemia. Iron is an important part of the proteins that carry oxygen through the blood to various parts of the body. It also helps regulate cell growth.
  1. Significance

    • There is no immediate risk of taking iron pills with coffee and it is safe to do so. If you are taking iron pills to correct an iron deficiency, there can be a long-term risk if you use coffee with your iron pills everyday.

    Potential

    • Coffee can interfere with the absorption of iron because it contains polyphenols. If your body is not absorbing the iron from your pills, then your iron can get very low. Other substances that can interfere with iron absorption include calcium, fiber and soy.

    Effects

    • If your iron gets too low, you may have to go to the emergency room for a blood transfusion. Other symptoms of severe anemia include chest pain, trouble breathing, low energy, pale skin and a rapid heartbeat.

    Considerations

    • Other food and drink that contain polyphenols are tea, wine, chocolate and walnuts. You also should avoid dairy products due to the calcium, whole grain due to the fiber, nuts, soy and certain fruits and vegetables.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To increase iron absorption, do not take your iron pill less than one hour or two hours after you consume any of the above foods. You can also take your pill with substances that help absorb iron, meat proteins and vitamin C.

    Warning

    • You should always consult your doctor before taking iron pills. Too much iron can be toxic and even deadly, so it is important to have your hemoglobin levels checked to see how much, if any, iron you need.
