Uses for L-Lysine

L-lysine is not produced by the body, but it is essential for optimal function. For that reason, the amino acid must be obtained through food or supplements. L-Lysine is helpful in preventing several diseases and conditions.
  1. Herpes

    • Supplementation with L-lysine can help prevent and speed the recovery of an outbreak of the herpes simplex virus. Herpes can occur both orally and genitally.

    Shingles

    • Shingles is an outbreak of painful lesions due to the herpes zoster virus. Shingles usually occurs on the skin along a nerve. L-lysine can help prevent and speed recovery of an outbreak.

    Osteoporosis

    • L-lysine helps the digestive tract absorb calcium and prevents loss of calcium in the urine. Calcium is essential for the prevention of bone loss due to osteoporosis.

    Bone Rebuilding

    • In addition to stemming the loss of essential bone density, L-lysine in combination with L-arginine may actually promote bone and collagen growth.

    Kidney Stones

    • A deficiency of L-lysine has been linked to the development of kidney stones and anemia. However, unless the diet is strictly vegetarian, it is rare to have too little L-lysine. Some athletes involved in vigorous athletic training may become at risk for deficiency.
