Which Vitamins Should Be Taken Together?

Multivitamins take into account that certain vitamins and minerals work better in tandem than alone, but many supplements do not contain complementary vitamins. This can hinder the body's ability to process and use the vitamins. The following are commonly found supplements with the complementary vitamins or minerals that allow the body to access their full potential.
  1. Vitamins C and E

    • Individuals can get the most out of either of these essential vitamins by taking them together.

    Selenium and Vitamin E

    • Taking selenium with vitamin E increases the heart-healthy benefits of the vitamins.

    Folic Acid and B Vitamins

    • Folic acid, which is especially important for pregnant women during the first trimester, works best when taken with B6 and B12.

    Calcium and Magnesium

    • Calcium comes from many sources, but none of it can be processed without magnesium. Those with particular calcium needs should also take additional magnesium.

    Zinc and Copper

    • The body needs a little copper to use the zinc commonly taken to fight a cold or flu. Most foods enriched with zinc also contain some copper.

    Warning

    • WebMD cautions against taking large doses of supplements, which might produce unhealthy effects or have detrimental repercussions. Read vitamin labels carefully to avoid overdosing.
