Iron Supplement Facts

Iron is an essential mineral that helps blood cells transport oxygen throughout the body. An insufficient amount of iron results in a lack of energy. Over time, this condition can present serious health complications. Iron deficiency anemia can be caused by several conditions, namely, blood loss, not enough iron-rich foods in the diet, or the body's increased demand for iron, as during pregnancy. Depending on the urgency of the medical cause, iron supplements may be recommended.
  1. Forms of Supplemental Iron

    • Ferrous fumarate, ferrous sulfate and ferrous gluconate are best absorbed by the body.

    Side Effects

    • Nausea, constipation, diarrhea or dark-colored stools may occur. To decrease these symptoms, start with half of the recommended dose and gradually increase to desired dosage.

    Increase Iron Absorption

    • To gain the most benefit from iron supplements, take them with a source of vitamin C.

    Monitoring Iron Levels

    • Your red blood cells and hemoglobin levels will need to be checked to gauge the effectiveness of the iron supplements.

    Results

    • Hemoglobin levels usually increase within three weeks of supplementation.

    Dangers

    • Adult men and postmenopausal women are at a greater risk of iron overload, a serious medical condition, when using supplements.
