Side Effects of Niacin

Niacin is a variant of Vitamin B that is recommended to help lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart attack and care for coronary artery disease. Niacin is found naturally in many foods--including chicken, lima beans, whole grains, and peanut products. It is also a common entity in the human body. Niacin supplements may be purchased over the counter, however some side effects may occur. As with all supplements, speak to a medical professional before starting them.
  1. Heat and Cold Intolerance

    • Individuals who are taking niacin supplements may experience unusual sweating, chills and intolerance for cold and heat.

    Blood Sugar Symptoms

    • Diabetics who take niacin supplements may experience significant deregulation in their blood sugar levels.

    Skin Irritation

    • Dry skin--or skin that is sensitive to sunlight--is a possible side effect of niacin.

    Stomach Issues

    • Niacin may cause stomach pain, increased gas, nausea, and diarrhea.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Niacin supplements may cause some serious side effects in certain individuals, including irregular heartbeat, jaundice, joint swelling, and fainting.
