Foods to Avoid With High Potassium Levels

People with kidney infections or kidney disease usually have to follow a low-potassium diet. Since the kidneys balance the potassium levels in the body, people with a kidney dysfunction have to avoid high levels of potassium in foods. Here are a few foods to avoid if you are on a low-potassium diet:
  1. Bananas

    • Bananas contain over 225 mg of potassium per serving. Since they are often eaten whole, they can be easy to avoid.

    Milk

    • Milk is surprisingly high in potassium, containing almost the same levels as bananas. You will want to check your ingredient lists on products to make sure that you are not accidentally ingesting milk or milk products.

    Tomatoes

    • Tomatoes are not only high in potassium, but are also high in acid content. This can be particularly harmful for people with kidney issues.

    Lima Beans

    • You should avoid lima beans because they are extremely high in potassium, delivering over 225 mg per serving.

    Meat

    • All meats are high in potassium and should be avoided. If the prospect of becoming a vegetarian does not appeal to you, there are many meat replacements on the market that have a very similar texture and taste as meat.
