How to Read Labels on a Vitamin Bottle
Instructions
-
-
1
Look for a box titled "Supplement Facts" on the back of the bottle.
-
2
Find the serving size in the "Supplement Facts" box. The serving size is how many pills or capsules you should take. Be sure to follow instructions on how often to take the supplement; don't take a larger dose, or a more frequent dose, than recommended.
-
3
Study the list of dietary ingredients, located underneath the serving size. This list reports all dietary ingredients in the vitamin and the percent of the recommended daily value, if one exists for that nutrient. For example, a vitamin supplement might list vitamin B-12, calcium and iron. If you have a specific nutrient deficiency, make sure the supplement includes that nutrient, and in sufficient amounts.
-
4
Look for any warnings, cautions or possible side effects. These may be listed underneath the "Supplement Facts" box, or next to it. For example, pregnant women should not take certain supplements, and certain medications may interact with supplements.
-
5
Check the expiration date, listed underneath the "Supplement Facts" box. Do not take vitamin supplements that have expired.
-
6
Read any disclaimers printed with product claims. The FDA doesn't approve vitamin supplements to treat specific health conditions. Never take vitamins, or other dietary supplements, instead of prescribed medication.
