The Combined Effects of Bromelain & Beta Carotene

Bromelain is a plant extract found in pineapples that contains protein-digesting (proteolytic) enzymes. Pineapples have been used for centuries to reduce inflammation. Beta carotene is an organic molecular formation that forms a strongly colored red, orange and yellow pigment. It is present in many fruits and vegetables. It is an antioxidant and provides vitamin A to the body. Together bromelain and beta carotene can be used to treat and ease the symptoms of chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD).
  1. Bromelain Supplements

    • Although bromelain does occur in pineapples, the levels present naturally are not enough to provide a medicinal effect. Bromelain supplements have been approved by the federal Food & Drug Administration and used successfully to treat chronic bronchitis. Taking bromelain is a way to ease symptoms; its primary function is the reduction of sinus inflammation. It can also help the body to break up mucus and reduce coughing.

    Beta Carotene

    • Beta carotene is considered an active provitamin because it converts to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A strengthens the immune system and helps to repair tissues and mucous membrane. Vitamin A also acts as an antioxidant, can help to protect cells from disease and promotes new cell growth. According to Dr. James F. Balch in "Prescription for Natural Healing, studies of beta carotene show that it neutralizes free radicals in the body, aiding in cancer prevention.

    How to Take Them Together

    • Bromelain can be found in tablet and capsule form and Balch recommends a dosage of 500 mg on an empty stomach four times a day. Beta carotene is most effective in its natural form. Five to eight servings per day of foods rich in beta carotene are recommended by many leading health agencies, including the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and the World Health Organization.

Research on the Combined Effects of Bromelain and Beta Carotene

    • Although there has been extensive research on the effects of bromelain and beta carotene individually, there have been no published studies of their combined effects. The leading research on chronic bronchitis and COPD does recommend increasing levels of antioxidants in the body and maintaining a healthful diet rich in fruit and vegetables. However, there is a need for more research in the field on how these nutrients specifically work together to aid in the treatment of bronchitis and COPD.
