What Flavors Help Suppress Appetite?

Many appetite suppressants are on the market, though not all of them are proven to be safe or effective. Appetite suppressants in the form of food or drink include green tea and even water. By drinking enough water, you are properly hydrating your body so that you don't mistake hunger for thirst. However, there are specific flavors of food that you can consume to combat the hunger pangs. Eating small portions of certain types of foods or flavors can help prevent you from overeating. Though this method doesn't work for all people, it's worth trying to see if it works for you.
  1. Spicy

    • Sample overly spicy flavors. Spicy red pepper is a great appetite suppressant as it triggers the mind into thinking that you are fuller than you are due to the potent flavor. Spicy foods also can set your mouth and stomach ablaze for a short period of time so that you aren't inclined to eat a lot of it, or anything else. Have a side of something spicy with your next meal and watch your portion size dwindle substantially.

    Nutty

    • Natural nutty flavors are generally found in actual nuts or peanut butter. These substances are high in fiber and fats. As they take longer to break down due to the high fiber content, you generally can eat smaller portions of these substances. Nutty flavors are also bold in taste so a little goes quite a way. Most people naturally refrain from overconsumption as the taste becomes less appealing quickly.

    Bitter

    • Bitter foods are also hard for people to consume in large quantities. The bitter taste can initially be pleasing but can grow to be bad taste for the palate. Bitter substances also linger on the palate longer and because of the lingering taste, the body thinks that it is being fed when actually it is not. The lingering bitter flavor can actually suppress your appetite and please you as you will be inclined to consume less food in one sitting.

    Bold

    • Bold or strong flavors can also suppress your appetite. People are more likely to consume and crave larger quantities of bland food, because bland or lightly seasoned food can be eaten in large quantities without becoming distasteful. Overly strong flavors such as those that are excessively sweet or rich are harder to consume quickly and in large quantities for most people. Strong flavors can also come from various marinades or sauces, which can often overpower a dish and make it difficult to consume in mass quantities.
