Regularly go swimming in order to fight the problem of water retention, which can sometimes be a cause of cankles. This will negate some of the retention caused through excessive consumption of alcohol, a salty diet, periods of inactivity, hormone fluctuations and pregnancy.

Exercise your calves and lower legs. Simple exercises such as running or calf stretches can help to tone the muscles in your calf, ensuring they are firm and much less likely to become saggy and merge with your ankle.
