Are Weight Scales Omnidirectional?
A weight scale is a measuring device to determine the weight of a person or an object. Weight scales typically use spring scales to measure the weight of what's on it.-
Calibration
-
Weight scales are not omnidirectional. The scales are calibrated to measure force in just one direction. Applying force on either side of the weight scale will cause it to give a false reading.
Hooke's Law
-
The spring scale works on the Hooke's Law principle. Applied force on the spring is directly related to the amount the spring stretches. The amount of the stretch helps determine the weight of the object or person.
Spring Scale
-
Inside a spring scale is a large dial which has the different weights listed. Also inside is a pinion set and rack to turn the dial, followed by the spring and four levers. The four levers are attached to a plate that is connected to the spring. They're used to evenly distribute the weight on the scale.
